The Australian Photovoltaic Association stated in a recent report that Australia's per capita solar energy capacity reached 810W, which is a global leader. Germany ranks second with 650W/person.

In 2020, Australia will add 3GW of rooftop solar capacity, a record. The country installed 370,000 rooftop solar systems in 2020, an increase of 40%. Among them, the household sector increased by 1.8GW, and the industrial and commercial sector increased by 1.2GW, setting a record in these two sectors.

In 2020, the average rooftop installed capacity (<100 kW)) is 8kW, which is higher than the 7.1kW in 2019. As the scale of household systems grows and more companies choose solar energy, it is expected that the average scale of solar systems will continue to grow.

Including rooftop and ground solar projects, Australia will add 4.5GW of solar capacity in 2020. As of the end of 2020, Australia’s cumulative solar capacity reached 20.8GW. By mid-2021, the cumulative solar capacity will increase to 22.3GW.

Australia's rooftop solar installed capacity increased from 1.3GW in 2011 to 13GW, an increase of 10 times. Over 31% of independent households nationwide use solar photovoltaic systems for power supply. Queensland and South Australia are in a leading position, with approximately 40% of independent homes powered by solar energy.

By the end of 2020, 2.69 million households in Australia will be powered by rooftop solar power. By the end of 2021, about 3 million households in Australia will be powered by solar energy.

According to the report, the national utility solar capacity has also increased tenfold in three years, from 740MW in 2017 to 7.4GW in 2020.

Australia’s photovoltaic power generation estimate has increased from 22.8GWh in the previous year to 29.1GWh in 2020.

Due to advances in technology and manufacturing, between 2007 and 2013, the price of solar energy dropped significantly. The report pointed out that as prices continue to fall, the market will maintain a strong growth momentum.

The price of solar modules has dropped from 8 Australian dollars (approximately US$5.9) in 2005 to 0.47 Australian dollars (approximately US$0.35) in 2020.

The price of 5-10kW grid-connected residential rooftop solar systems has dropped from 12 Australian dollars (approximately US$8.86)/W in 2005 to 1.52 Australian dollars (approximately US$1.12)/W in 2020. The price of a 10-50MW concentrated solar system has dropped from 2.7 Australian dollars (approximately US$1.99)/W in 2014 to 1.85 Australian dollars (approximately US$1.37)/W in 2018.

According to the Australian Clean Energy Regulatory Agency, in the second quarter of 2021, 729MW of rooftop solar was installed in Australia, an increase of 8% compared to 677MW in the same period last year.
